Is Your Home Ready for the Winter?

I love this time of year! The leaves changing colors, drinking hot coco, and curling up next to a warm fire with a good book. Though it is a beautiful time, it can be less enjoyable if your home is not prepared for the cold months ahead. Now is the time to check your roof and storm drainage system to protect your home from water damage and any other avoidable problems. Get a head start now with these simple maintenance checks.

Inspect Your Roof. This inspection can actually be completed from the safety of staying on the ground. During your inspection look for rusty or damaged flashing, missing or broken shingles, and signs of excessive moss and lichen. If you see any of these issues, call a roofing repair service www.chisholmroofing.ca or fix simpler repairs yourself.

Clean Out Gutters. Debris can clogged up your gutters and lead to major water damage to your roof and even the interior structure of your home. Take a moment to clean out your gutters, remove any large objects, such as twigs, leaves, and dirt; flushing out any remaining debris with your garden hose.

Inspect Your Ceilings. While checking for damage to your roof, be sure to check the ceilings and walls of your upper story for signs water damage. Water rings, mold, or other discoloration can help you pinpoint potential leaks in your roof.

Seal Doors and Windows. With the rainy season also comes lower temperatures. To keep your house energy efficient and safe from water damage, it’s important to check the seal on your doors and windows and ensure that they close properly.

Prune Trees. Low hanging limbs can damage or even puncture a roof during a big storm. Remove any limbs that are dead or dying, and trim branches that are within ten feet from the roof.

While no one can predict Vancouver’s big storms, preparing your home early is the best way to prevent storm-related damage.
